CREATIVE KEGGER 001 :
Mike Vargas and Denver design studio, Trust, host a new monthly event series at Cluster Studios titled Creative Keggers. Built around conceptual themes, these expansive community gatherings transcend the standard fair party combining education and entertainment. Participation is the word for these interactive happenings? stimulation abounds to activate the creative reflexes; dance, play, converse, create, the line between audience and performer blurs in the multifaceted 22,000 square foot Cluster Studios warehouse.
Combining forces, Trust and creative publication, Illiterate, collaborate to host Creative Keggers 001: New York City Street Games. This event, taking place on On May 29, 2009, kicks off transporting iconic outdoor recreational traditions from the heart of the Empire State to the heights of the Mile High City. In the 20th century, amidst the ever-expanding concrete jungle of the Big Apple, cement served as the playground for children across the Five Boroughs, from the lower east side to Spanish Harlem, Brooklyn Heights to Queens, from the Bronx to Yonkers, as the buildings climbed higher neighborhood street games evolved alongside them as recreational traditions of a distinct locale that thrives on a spirit of pride in play.
In a warehouse turned NYC streetscape, Trust and Illiterate invite Denver's creative community to let loose and get raucous playing world-renowned classics such as Hopscotch Basketball, Chess, Checkers, Dominoes while learning forgotten neighborhood favorites like Skelzies, Double Dutch, Shell Game and Handball. DJ's Musa and Peter Black bring the nostalgic sounds of the street back on the 1's and 2's for anyone who can prove they've got the old school moves. Truly a community collaboration, submit your art, photography and writing to a unique online scrapbook dedicated to the NYC Street Games theme at Illiterate's online arts community www.illiteratemedia.com and look for results at www.creativekegger.com.
Requiring little more than sneakers and a desire to participate, these seemingly youthful diversions cultivated more than just laughter and camaraderie; they sharpened the skills necessary to survive in a towering mass of people and pavement. Strategy, a combination of cooperation and competition, and a keen awareness of the urban environment separate the scrub and a street legend. On the second Friday in May, pull up your britches, roll up your sleeves and get ready to call next at Creative Keggers 001: New York City Street Games.
